Your First Milang – Goolwa Freshwater Classic?
Here are a few tips and suggestions to make your adventure easier
The majority of the race fleet sail from Goolwa to Milang on the day before the race, leaving their trailer at Goolwa for their return. However, you can launch your boat at either Goolwa (at the GRYC ramp) or at Milang. The carpark at the GRYC will be available for rigging and launching boats but there are limited temporary mooring facilities at the Club at Goolwa. A designated parking area for trailers at Goolwa is available opposite the club. The ramp at Milang has recently been dredged but trailer parking and the area for rigging boats is limited.
It is essential that the person in charge of each boat attends one of the 3 race briefings to ensure that they have all the latest information and that they are aware of any changes to Sailing Instructions. The briefings are documented each year in the notice of race under “registration”.
The Trip to Milang
Please be aware that the water levels around Lake Alexandrina and the Goolwa Channel from Goolwa to Point Sturt can vary significantly depending on wind strength and direction. It is suggested that boats follow the channel especially in areas around the mouth of Currency Creek and in the vicinity of Rat Island. The area around Point Sturt is generally of a consistent shallow depth with no clearly defined channel.
Anchoring at Milang
You can either moor by running into and tying up to the reeds a little way off the shoreline to the south of the jetty or by anchoring stern first along the beach in front of the shacks. Do not attempt to moor alongside the jetty. Water Taxi Boat Service A shuttle boat service will operate to ferry crew to and from boats anchored in the reeds (gold coin donation per trip). This service will operate from 1400 Hrs to 2300Hrs on Saturday and again from 0600 Hrs to 0900Hrs on Sunday. Please ensure that you leave sufficient time to return to your boat on the morning of the race as this service is very well patronised.
Overnight at Milang
The Milang Regatta Club will be open with full bar and meals available. Meals are also available at the Milang Hotel.
Before leaving Milang it is essential that each person in charge sign on at the sign-on desk at Milang Regatta Club to indicate that they are racing. This is a critical step in our safety strategy to track all boats through the 2 gates and along the whole course. The sign-on desk will be open from 0700 Hrs on Sunday morning. VHF Radio It is desirable that all boats other than ‘Off the Beach’ boats have a VHF radio. The count-down for each start may be transmitted over channel 72.
Please ensure that you are in the vicinity of the start line in time for your Division’s start BUT remain outside the starting box until your warning signal (5 minutes before your start). Also make sure you are familiar with the relevant numeral pennant for your Division’s start. This will be flown on the Committee Boat at the starboard end of the start line. Make sure that you pass through both gates marked on the course diagram as boat numbers will be recorded at each of these locations. Once you pass through the finish line at Goolwa, ensure that you remain well clear of the line and do not pass through the line again in either direction. Please remember that it is a requirement that you sign off at the GRYC office and collect your participation medallion within 45 minutes of finishing for your finish time to be recorded.
Good luck and have an enjoyable experience
